what I’ve read – 2023

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Violet and Amethyst deepen their relationship while trying to fight the coven and get closer to their dad.
The pace of the book is much better than the first one and therefore more enjoyable. I still have a lot of questions about the coven but I really enjoy the way Violet has grown. Absolutely love the way fantasy and mythology are intertwined. Violet’s character felt more developed and grounded in comparison with the first book, some of her choices were poor but I guess that’s part of being a teenager.
I’m not completely sure the world shaping of the story is clear and a lot of things seem to happen by coincidence.

It was in overall a good book, enjoyed the fantasy and the way in which the story of Violet gets setup. I found hard to believe that a teenager who has grown without trusting anybody will create close relationships and open up herself that fast.
It has a good twist at end but I wish we knew more about Sean, Mara and their coven! Their story was not explored enough, I wanted to know who they were without their relationship to Violet and Amethyst.
If you like YA fantasy with a bit of romance and teenager drama then this book is for you 😎

Overall a good story and it has so much potential to blow up. A bit slow in the beginning for my liking, it takes too long for something to happen. The story is basically about Anna who lives with her aunt who hates magic and forbids her from using it. Her aunt is part of a coven called The Binders who seek to restrain any magic users as they see magic as inherently evil.
The whole magic part felt very grounded and excellently written. Anna is a very likeable and relatable character. Towards the end, the story takes a bit of an unexpected twist which really rounds the book.
I didn’t quite enjoy the mean girls, probably too relatable for a part of my life that I’d prefer not to remember 😆
